Over 600 cattle impounded for invading Serengeti National Park in Tanzania

Livestock keepers living in villages surrounding Serengeti National Park have hatched new methods of trespassing into the conserved area by driving their large herds of cattle into the game park during the night.
This came to light about an hour past midnight in the early hours of Thursday night when game rangers working for the Tanzania National Parks impounded a herd of 600 cattle at Leng’osa Hill, inside Serengeti National Park. The herdsmen identified themselves as Yela Lotoiye, Samuel Makoi and Sembele Marko, all from Soitsambu Village in Loliondo Division of Ngorongoro District.
They admitted to have taken their cattle into Serengeti at night for grazing.
“There is drought everywhere and our livestock have been dying,” they claimed. Asked what would happen if lions, leopards and other ferocious animals attacked their livestock, the Maasai herders said: “If a lion eats one or two animals that is not so bad, because drought can annihilate hundreds,” said Ole Makoi.
Corporal James Daniel Senteu, one of the rangers who were on patrol when the livestock were seized, said it was a new ploy among nomadic grazers to trespass into the park at night, knowing they would not be detected.
The rangers drove the cattle for 15 kilometres, warding off other Maasai warriors who tried to follow them with weapons riding on motorbikes.
They compelled them to spend six hours from Leng’osa to Lobo Rocks where the entire herd is being kept, awaiting settling of penalties.

The Chief Conservator at Serengeti, Mr William Mwakilema, said they have upped the penalty for the cattle being illegally grazed inside the park, to 50,000/- per animal in order to discourage such behaviour and that, the 600 cattle that have just been confiscated will attract 30 million/-.

Nine epic fails from awards ceremonies and TV contests

It was a moment that will go down in entertainment history - when La La Land was wrongly given the award for best picture at the 2017 Oscars.
The teams behind the film were in the middle of their speeches before it was revealed the accolade should have gone to Moonlight
However, it is not the first time the wrong winner - or loser - has been announced at an awards ceremony or live on TV.

A little piece of paper was the cause of confusion at the 2016 Mobo awards when the prize for best song was given to the wrong winner.
R&B trio WSTRN kept their award for almost an hour before it was revealed it should have gone to MC Abra Cadabra.
Hosts Rickie Williams and Melvin Odoom announced the error, explaining "someone picked up the wrong envelope".
What a way to steal someone's thunder.

Wrong queen

It was possibly the shortest reign in history.
One minute Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, was being hailed as the winner of Miss Universe, the next she was watching "her" crown being placed on the head of Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

In a mistake of truly universal proportions, 2015 contest host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner and the winner's sash and crown were put on the wrong woman. Harvey then had to tell the world a terrible mistake had been made Awkward.

Taylor and Kanye

The organisers may have got this one right, but one high-profile member of the audience certainly disagreed.
Singer Taylor Swift had just won best female video for her song You Belong With Me at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. However, Kanye West didn't agree with it.

Before Swift managed to utter a single thank you, the rapper snatched the microphone from her and proceeded to tell the audience - and everyone watching on TV - that Beyonce should have won. Cue opened-mouthed shock from Miss Swift.

Model muddle

"I'm feeling sick about this," Australia's Next Top Model presenter Sarah Murdoch uttered to the astonishment of viewers.
Kelsey Martinovich had already been crowned as 2010 champion by public vote and was halfway through her acceptance speech.
Murdoch - wife of Lachlan Murdoch, the eldest son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch - then announced the actual winner of the TV contest was 18-year-old Amanda Ware."This is what happens when you have live TV, folks," Murdoch added.

Murs' mishap

Not so much announcing the wrong winner, as announcing the correct loser at the wrong time.
X Factor host Olly Murs had to apologise to 2015 contestant Monica Michael after he announced to the nation that she was leaving the talent show.
In fact, he had miscounted the votes from the four judges, thinking that three judges were sending Monica home. It was actually tied two-two and it went down to the public vote.
She lost the vote anyway - but everyone then thought it was a fix.

Eurovision confusion

The UK public had been voting to decide who would represent the UK at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, with bubblegum pop group Scooch and solo singer Cyndi both among the hopeful finalists.
So there was understandable confusion when hosts Sir Terry Wogan and Fearne Cotton simultaneously announced different winners live on air.
Moments later Cotton announced that Scooch had indeed won the public vote. A BBC statement later apologised for the gaffe but confirmed Scooch had won and would be making the trip to Helsinki. Meanwhile, Cyndi's hopes of Euro glory were well and truly Finnish-ed.
Scooch later finished joint 22nd out of the 24 Eurovision finalists.

Cake, then mistake

Somewhat bizarrely Michael Jackson actually accepted a non-existent award at the 2002 MTV video music awards.
The show happened to be held on the "King of Pop's" birthday, and after calling him on stage to receive a birthday cake, singer Britney Spears told the audience she considered him to be the "artist of the millennium".
Jackson then began a full acceptance speech.
"When I was a little boy growing up in Indiana if someone told me that one day as a musician I'd be getting the artist of the millennium award, I wouldn't have believed it," he said.
He thanked God, his mother, Diana Ross and magician David Blaine, among others.

Lost in translation

Singer Katy Perry accepted the award for best international song during France's 2009 NRJ Music Awards, held in Cannes.
However, the gong wasn't actually meant for her. It should have been awarded to Rihanna.
Perry's embarrassment was eased slightly by the fact she did legitimately win best international album for her One of the Boys album at the same awards ceremony.
Sacré bleu.

Brandon's boozy Brit

DJ Brandon Block stumbled on stage at the 2000 Brit Awards believing he had won something.
In fact, Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood and American Beauty actress Thora Birch were in the middle of presenting the best soundtrack award to the film Notting Hill.
Block later recalled that - having been enjoying the corporate hospitality to the full - he had been duped into thinking he had won an award by his mates, and had obligingly trooped up to collect it.
It ended with Block being manhandled by security and Wood throwing his drink over him.

Try combining chopped raw onions with tomatoes, avocado, and jalapeño peppers for a blood sugar–friendly chip dip. Finish with a splash of lime juice.

Corn

On the cob or off, just make sure you eat your corn cooked! A study in the Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry found that the longer corn was cooked, the higher the levels of antioxidants like lutein, which combats blindness in older adults. Try this recipe for coconut grilled corn.

Peas

Tiny but mighty, one study in the International Journal of Cancer found that daily consumption of green peas along with other legumes lowered the risk of stomach cancer. Try a brown rice risotto with lemon and green peas.

Kale

This veggie's curly green leaves are chock full of vitamin C, an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering levels of LDL, or "bad" cholesterol.

Broccoli

Broccoli is full of cancer-fighting antioxidants. One study found men who ate 5 servings or more per week of cruciferous veggies (broccoli's one of them!) were half as likely to develop bladder cancers over a 10-year period as men who rarely ate them. Enjoy with some broccoli cheddar soup.

Red bell pepper

One medium pepper is light on calories (only 32!) but heavy on vitamin C, providing 150 percent of your recommended daily value and warding off atherosclerosis, which can lead to heart disease. Try one of these recipes for stuffed peppers.

Spinach

Alfalfa sprouts

This tiny powerhouse is rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that protects against lung cancer and helps maintain healthy skin, hair, nails, gums, glands, bones, and teeth. It's also a good source of vitamin E, which may help prevent heart attacks, stokes, and lower the risk of death from bladder cancer. Try this chicken, avocado, and alfalfa sprouts sandwich.

Brussels sprouts

These balls of antioxidants can help detoxify cancer-causing free radicals, and with 80 percent of your daily vitamin C in just 1/2 cup, also help fight heart disease and ward off cataracts. Try sautéing them with a little bacon or olive oil and mustard  for a smoky kick.

Beets

Roasted or pickled, this root vegetable contains high levels of antioxidants that fight cancer, as well as lutein, which protects the eyes. Don't throw out those leaves! During his presidential campaign President Trump said trans gender students should be allowed to use whichever bathroom "they feel is appropriate". Trump  rescinded  his stance after facing Republican criticism.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, also praised the move he said;
"Our fight over the bathroom directive has always been about former President Obama's attempt to bypass Congress and rewrite the laws to fit his political agenda for radical social change,"
Conservative activists praised Mr. Trump's order, saying it protected student rights to privacy.
"Our daughters should never be forced to share private, intimate spaces with male classmates, even if those young men are struggling with these issues," said Vicki Wilson, a member of Students and Parents for Privacy.
"It violates their right to privacy and harms their dignity."

Some celebrities such as Katy Perry, Jackie Evancho and Ellen DeGenere also criticised the decision on social media, with TV presenter Ellen DeGenere tweeting: "This isn't about politics. It's about human rights."

RUSSIA'S AMBASSADOR TO UN DIES

RUSSIA'S AMBASSADOR TO UN DIES.

Vitaly Churkin, Russia's ambassador to UN dies suddenly at 64 one day before his 65th birthday. Churkin died after suffering from cardiac arrest, he was administered to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where he died. Churkin was at the Russian Mission on East 67th Street.
He was known as a profoundly intelligent, combative, disarming and humorous fixture at the UN Security Council.
Former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power, who frequently clashed with Churkin, most recently over the Russian bombing of Aleppo, nonetheless called him "a diplomatic maestro and deeply caring man". Former secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said of Churkin, "He was an outstanding diplomat and an intellectual star. His diplomatic skills, quick wit and ready sense of humor will long be remembered."
Churkin first came to the attention of the American public following the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986. In an extraordinary moment, Churkin, then a junior diplomat testified before the U.S. Congress and were castigated for the Soviet Union's handling of the accident.
It was the early days of liberalization under Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and Churkin was something new: a handsome, thirty-something diplomat with flawless English and none of the bellicosity for which Soviet officials were typically known.
Churkin went on to be Foreign Ministry spokesman, conducting the regular ministry briefing first in Russian, then answering questions in English, the better to reach western and in particular American audiences.
Vitaly Churki
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the new Russian Federation absorbed the Soviet diplomatic corps and Churkin's career continued uninterrupted. Among other missions, Churkin played an important though largely unheralded role in bringing the war in Yugoslavia to a close.
Churkin is survived by his wife Irina, daughter Anastasia and son Maksim.
