Tanzania set to Use Nuclear in power production.
The
topic is discussed among the 33 delegates from 23 African countries attending
the ongoing ‘Regional Workshop on Nuclear Law for African Member States,’ which
is taking place here for five days organized by the Tanzania Atomic Energy
Commission (TAEC) based in Arusha.
Brigadier
General Fulgences Msafiri said that
“Today
the use of nuclear technology is very important in many aspects of modern life,
as radiation sources are essential for many applications, including nuclear
power plants, biomedical applications such as nuclear medicine therapy and in
the manufacturing and processing industries.
Earlier, an advocate from the office of
the Kenyan Attorney General, Ms Josephine Sinyo, pointed out that many people
in the African continent relate the terms ‘nuclear’ and ‘atomic,’ energy with
war, heavy weapons and essentially death.
“We are yet to educate our people regarding the positive and
productive side of atomic and nuclear powers,” she stated.
Experts from the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), including Dr F. Tonos Paniagua, Dr A. Cherf and Dr Vez
Carmona, described some of the IAEA key functions promoting and regulating
beneficial uses of the atomic energy for human sustainability.
